Introduction

A writer discusses his life as an alcoholic by exchanging stories with fellow patients in a treatment facility. This portrayal of the dark emotions that plague those who have hit the bottom uses bewildering time shifts and rapid editing to create a jarring work marked by a realistic approach.
The Mighty Angel joins a long line of cinematic masterpieces that focus on alcoholic writers, including The Lost Weekend (1945) and Leaving Las Vegas (1995). Though the film is based on a work of fiction, the book presumably draws on the author’s own battle with the bottle. Relentlessly exposing the main character’s numerous flaws, the film makes for decidedly difficult viewing. Yet director Wojtek Smarzowski achieves a cinematic catharsis by immersing us in the protagonist’s slow decline and painful struggle to reclaim his life. Moreover, Smarzowski’s technique of jumbling the sequence of events amplifies the viewing experience by recreating an alcoholic’s distorted temporal perception. The film confronts the darkness within us while carefully examining the delicate nature of the human heart and ultimately finding hope in the power of love.
