Born in 1959, Hara has worked extensively on popular shows, such as Doraemon and Crayon Shin-chan, and gained international recognition with Japan Academy Prize-winner Summer Days with Coo (2007) and Annecy double winner Colorful (2010). He admires classic Japanese filmmakers such as Keisuke Kinoshita, to whom he dedicated his first live-action movie, Dawn of a Filmmaker (2013).
