The 27th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) is excited to announce that “PIKMIN Short Movies” will premiere in 3D at this year’s festival as part of this year’s focus on animation.
The film was produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, Senior Managing Director of Nintendo and world-acclaimed game producer for “Super Mario Bros.”, “Donkey Kong”, “The Legend of Zelda” and many other popular game series.
“PIKMIN Short Movies” is an achievement of a research project to give more life to the game characters of “Pikmin”. “Pikmin” was first presented in 2001 and the latest version, “Pikmin 3” was released for Wii U in 2013. “PIKMIN Short Movies” is the first “Pikmin” short-animation film.
Shigeru Miyamoto was named to the TIME 100 list influential people in 2007. Called “the Spielberg of video games”, Miyamoto has won many awards, including the “2006 Chevalier de L’Ordre des Arts et des Letters,” the “Minister Prize of Economic, Trade and Industry at Japan Game Awards” in 2008, and Spain’s “Comunicación y Humanidades: Premios Príncipe de Asturias” in 2012.
A talk will be held after its screening on October 25th at TOHO Cinemas Nihonbashi with Shigeru Miyamoto and Nobuo Kawakami, who is the Chairman of Dwango and a producer-trainee at Studio Ghibli. The event will be admission-free, the tickets will be available on ‘ticket board’ from October 11. Synopsis of “PIKMIN Short Movies”
Pikmin are a mysterious mix of plant and animal. Captain Olimar is an astronaut who happens to come to their planet. Pikmin live together with him and collect various treasures on the planet. Pikmin come out from their game world and appear in a CG animation film. This omnibus film contains three short episodes: “The Night Juicer,” in which Captain Olimar makes his favorite juice; “Treasures in a Bottle,” in which Pikmin meet a strange treasure; “Occupational Hazards,” a big adventure at a construction site.

Shigeru MIYAMOTO was born in Kyoto in 1952. After graduating from Kanazawa College of Art in 1977, he joined Nintendo and became Senior Managing Director of the company and General Manager of Entertainment Analysis & Development Division in 2010. He is considered the greatest video game designer in the world by his peers and widely known as the game designer and producer of “Super Mario Bros.”, “Donkey Kong”, “The Legend of Zelda” and other many popular game series. He was selected TIME 100 in 2007 and TIME has praised him as “THE SPIELBERG OF VIDEO GAMES”.
