Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) is happy to announce that “Honjitsu Tadaima Tanjo”, a long-lost film starring Hitoshi Ueki of the “Crazy Cats” comedy group, will be screened in collaboration with Nihon Eiga Satellite Broadcasting Coporation as a Special Program at this year’s TIFF.
Thought to be lost after a short theatrical run in 1979, “Honjitsu Tadaima Tanjo” was discovered in the Watanabe Productions warehouse in May 2012. After two years of restoration, the 35mm film is now ready for screening in HD format. The story follows Michio Ozawa, head priest of Hoeiji Temple, taken as forced labor to Siberia following WWII. He loses both legs to frostbite, returns home, and sets about living through the chaos of post-war Japan.
We will hold a talk event welcoming Director of the film, Yasuo Furuhata (“Railroad Man” (1999), “Dearest” (2012)) during the festival.
