This title is Anno’s professional debut work on a full scale. Anno wanted to work for Ichiro Itano, so he went to Tokyo alone while he was still at university, and participated in the Artland machinery team as a part-time worker while living at the production studio for the duration. As he was not good at characters, he worked exclusively on key animation of machinery.　 (Excerpt from # 2, 9, 24, 27)
 

 
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind（1984）　Excerpt

This film introduced Anno to Hayao Miyazaki, another of his mentors who is as equally important as Itano. Anno was expelled from university and was looking for work. He showed videos and original illustrations of his animation to Miyazaki, who offered him a job on the spot. Anno came to Tokyo with just one bag, lived at the production studio and worked as a freelance animator. Miyazaki figured out early on that Anno could not draw characters, thus he let him take responsibility for more effects-oriented animation such as the stirrings and emergence of the Giant Warrior.

This theater version was made in response to the success of the TV series. Anno was mainly responsible for the key animation for the Macross fighting scenes.

ROYAL SPACE FORCE Pilot Film (Wings of Riquinni – First Footage)（1986）

[HIDEAKI ANNO] Animation Director･Key Animation
 
This film was made for the purpose of client’s review to consider production of the main theatrical film. Anno was the machinery animation director and responsible for original drawings, etc. for the opening scene. The version that was partially reworked and used to announce the production of the film is screened. The sub-title at the time was “Wings of Riquinni”.

The first theatrical film by GAINAX, an enthusiastic young group of staff, whose average age was only 24. Anno was responsible for scene design, storyboard, original drawings for rocket launch scenes, and supervised animation for machinery and effects.
